Christmas Island/Xmas Island

Christmas Island/Xmas Island is a territory of Australia of approximately 16,500 hectares, located in the Indian Ocean. Formerly a part of the Straits Settlements and then Singapore with their stamps being used. Administration was transferred to Australia in 15th October,1958.  Malayan currency was used until 1968 when Australian currency became the base currency. Christmas Island was occupied by the Japanese from 31st March,1942 until September,1945.

On 2nd March,1993 responsibilty for Christmas Island postal service was transferred to Australia Post. All issues from SG 372/7 to date are also valid for postal use in Australia and also Australian stamps are valid for use in Christmas Island/Xmas Island
