Cocos(Keeling) Islands
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands were settled by the Clunies Ross family in the 1820's then annexed by Great Britain in 1857. In 1878 these islands were under the control of Ceylon before administration transferred to to the Straits Settlements in 1886. During WWII were under the control of the British military exercised from Ceylon. At the end of the war Singapore continued the administration until the control of the Islands was transferred to Australia in 1955. Straits Settlements stamps were used frpm April,1933 to March,1937. After the war in 1952 Singapore stamps were used until 1955. From 1955-63 Australian stamps were in use. The Cocos(Keeling) Islands consists of 25 islands with a total area of approx.1300 hectares in the Indian Ocean. The islands were discovered in 1609 by Captain Keeling of the Royal British Navy. Alexander Hare and a group of women settled in Direction Island in 1823 and Captain John Clunies Ross and family settled on Home Island in 1827. Clunies Ross was in complete control in 1835 when Hare returned home.
